Using the Telephone to Call Home
The phones in the villas will provide you with the
ability to make unlimited local calls, but any outgoing long-distance calls will
require a credit card. There are two main options that we recommend:
1) AT&T calling card. They can provide you with a toll-free 800# to use
when calling from the Bahamas to reach a US operator. All you have to do
is call AT&T and tell them you want a Call ATT card with international access.
The cost of calling home is $0.25 - the same rate applies when calling the villa
from the states.
2) A Batelco prepaid calling card. Cards are for sale at the
Batelco office right in the shopping area, and they are available in $5, $10,
and $20 denominations. The card provides you with an access number to call
to reach the operator, and has an access code on the back – that is the one to
buy if you plan to use the villa phone. A ‘hard card’ is available that
can be swiped in any payphone – the card has a microchip in it that tracks the
available minutes – and it makes a nice souvenir. Batelco rates are
generally a little more expensive than AT&T.
A third option is to bring your own cell phone. Call ahead and
check with Batelco –
(the Bahamas Telephone company) to verify that your phone will work in Abaco
before you go. You may need to switch your digital phone to analog, for
instance. Not all phones are compatible with the cellular phone network in
the Bahamas. You may also need to contact your own service provider to
verify that your cellular account will allow calls to be made internationally.
